An Introduction to Choosing By Advantages
Speaker:

Aaron Preston, Integrated Design & Lean Construction Consultant
Aaron has diverse experience within the construction industry, from leading project teams in an owner representative role to fostering collaboration onsite as a hands-on project manager. Most recently he has coached project teams during design and construction phases in their implementation of lean management approaches. Aaron has worked for such companies as ExxonMobil, Barton Malow and Linbeck. He has earned a BS in Architectural Engineering from Drexel University and an MBA from Boston University.
Abstract:
Aaron Preston will introduce the definitions, principles and methods of the Choosing By Advantages (CBA) Decision-Making System. Please note that this is not a comprehensive training session. By the end of this presentation attendees should be able to understand the difference between sound and unsound decisions and begin individual practice of CBA for low complexity, non-money decisions. The presentation will be interactive and will include a group decision simulation.
Date and Time:
Friday, November 11, 2011, from 7:30am-10:30am
Registration/Cancellation Deadline: Wednesday, November 9th by 5:00pm. Please help us save time, expense, and avoid people showing up at the last minute… plan ahead and register early!
Value-Added Proposition (i.e., how it benefits attendees)
Decision-making is a key skill for our personal and organizational success. Attendees will become aware of how they currently make decisions and recognize opportunities for improving their ability to make consistently sound decisions.

LCI Colorado Community of Practice
The Lean Construction Institute (LCI), a non-profit research organization, was founded in August 1997. LCI's purpose is to develop and disseminate new knowledge regarding the management of work in design, engineering and construction for capital facilities. LCI has developed the Lean Project Delivery System© (LPDS), and the Last Planner® System of production control. Lean Construction is a production management-based approach to project delivery - a new way to design and build capital facilities. Lean production management has caused a revolution in manufacturing design, supply and assembly. Applied to construction, Lean changes the way work is done throughout the delivery process. Lean Construction extends from the objectives of a lean production system - maximize value and minimize waste - to specific techniques and applies them in a new project delivery process extending from project definition through design, supply and assembly.
The Colorado Community of Practice of LCI provides local lean support to owners, architects and designers, engineers, contractors, specialty contractors, and suppliers. We invite owners and project delivery team members to meet together as a local user group to learn, share, and develop a lean community in Colorado. As a regional forum for conversations among practitioners, the CoP will help create a new common sense for the AEC industry as LCI continues to build knowledge in design and construction.
